Looking to join a choir in Cheshire or South Manchester? The Laurence Singers is a friendly mixed choir based in Cheadle Hulme, welcoming singers from across Stockport, Cheshire and South Manchester.
If you enjoy singing, can sing in tune and blend with other voices, and are prepared to work at learning the music, we would be delighted to meet you.
About The Laurence Singers
The Laurence Singers is a 30-strong mixed choir based in Cheadle Hulme, with members travelling from a wide surrounding area. The choir has been established for over 50 years and has had only two conductors during that time. Our Musical Director, Cliff Crewe, has led the choir for more than 25 years, helping to shape its distinctive sound and welcoming atmosphere.
We are a friendly and supportive group, but we are also committed to singing well and continually improving. A choir is the sum of its parts, every member contributes to the overall sound.
Who Can Join?
You do not need:
- A “great” solo voice
- Formal musical qualifications
- Extensive musical experience
You do need:
- The ability to sing in tune
- A willingness to blend with others
- Commitment to learning the music
We currently welcome good singers across all sections, particularly tenor and bass.
What We Sing
One of the things that makes the Laurence Singers different from many other choirs in Cheshire is the wide and varied repertoire we perform.
Our music ranges from:
- Light musical theatre favourites including Phantom of the Opera and Never Enough
- Popular classics such as Benedictus from The Armed Man
- Christmas extracts from Messiah
- Songs from the Great American Songbook including I Got Rhythm, Blue Moon and Over the Rainbow
- Jazz classics such as Duke Ellington’s It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing) and Glenn Miller’s In the Mood
- Works by composers including Mozart, Elgar, John Rutter, George Shearing and Bob Chilcott
There is always something engaging and musically rewarding to work on. You can hear some of our favourite pieces here and see some example programmes here.
Why Join a Choir?
The physical and mental wellbeing benefits of singing are well recognised. Regular singing can:
- Improve breathing and posture
- Reduce stress
- Boost mood
- Build confidence
Equally important is the social side. Rehearsals are focused but enjoyable, and the camaraderie within the choir is something members value highly. Ours is a fun choir with a strong sense of community.
Rehearsals
We rehearse every Wednesday evening from 7:30pm at:
