A look back at our April concert

The Laurence Singers finally got back on stage to perform the 1st concert in their 50th Anniversary musical celebrations. We performed at Wilmslow URC, a super venue and a good night was had by all.

The choir made a tremendous impression on the audience despite having 9 singers and the usual conductor, Cliff Crewe, absent because of Covid. The stand in conductor, Kath Buckley, at less than a week’s notice, led the reduced choir magnificently which was determined not to allow anything to prevent it performing for the first time in two and a half years.

The audience were entertained by a wide variety of music enhanced by the superb performances of Richard Brocklehurst (Organ) and Lauren Turner (Piano).

We also raised £500 for the Ukraine Disasters Emergency Appeal with a raffle and donations.

It’s great to be back performing again. Have a look at our gallery for some pictures from the evening.

Join us for our next concert on 14th May at Heald Green Methodist Church.

Heald Green Methodist Church on Saturday 14th May at 7.30pm

For the secibd concert in our Golden Jubilee 50th Year celebrations the choir is helping another organisation celebrating its 50th year. That is St. Ann’s Hospice in Heald Green. We are singing at a fund-raising event for the Hospice in Heald Green Methodist Church, Brown Lane, Heald Green, SK8 3RR on Saturday 14th May at 7.30pm. The 17th May is the actual date on which the Hospice was founded 50 years ago, so the timing is terrific!

Admission is £10 on the door with plenty of room, or tickets are available from 07790 363722 or publicity@thelaurencesingers.org.uk and will include refreshments.

The programme will have the variety of musical items for which the choir is very well known. It will include classical pieces – excerpt from Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’; spirituals- including ‘When the Saints go marching in’; the Great American Songbook – ‘Let’s call the whole thing off and ‘Skylark’ with piano and flute; British folk songs and items specific to the 50th Year celebrations for both organisations. A local composer has written a piece especially for the Laurence Singers called ‘A Golden Year’ and for the Hospice a piece by John Rutter ‘A Flower Remembered’ which has the haunting last phrase “We will remember” repeated and repeated – a poignant reference to the Hospice’s work. The choir’s brilliant accompanist, Lauren, will play two solos including ‘Clair de Lune’ by Debussy.

Do come and join us and support St Ann’s Hospice.

50th Anniversary Concert – Part 1

Wilmslow URC on Saturday 2nd April at 7.30pm

Our Conductor, Cliff Crewe has trawled back through 50 years of concert programmes to choose the essence of the choir’s repertoire during that time.

The first half will contain favourite extracts from the ‘classical’ repertoire including ‘Zadok the Priest’, items from both Mozart’s and Faure’s Requiems as well as Psalm 23 from ‘The Vicar of Dibley’ and other pieces. The lighter second half will have songs from the Great American Songbook, spirituals, a madrigal, folk songs including the ‘Londonderry Air’ as well as pieces composed especially for the Singers. The finale ‘When the Saints go marching in’ will give our audience a chance to let rip with the well-known melody.

Our brilliant accompanist Lauren Turner and organist Richard Brocklehurst will show off their skills too with solos to make up a glorious evening of popular and timeless music.

To support the ongoing crisis in Ukraine the proceeds of the raffle and any additional donations will go to the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine Appeal.

Refreshments will be served in the interval.
